Thailand Achievers Blog Hop July 2017: Masculine Pocket Card

 

Welcome to the last official Thailand Achievers Blog Hop. We're not really ending though, because in October we kick off 12 months of ALASKA Achievers hops! :) Yep! That's the next trip that many of us earned (and a few are still trying to earn...we have until the last day of September).

The theme for this month is: Holiday Catalog Favorites. So follow along and check out all the other blogs in the hop (click on the names of other participants in the list below) so you can see some fabulous cards and projects incorporating new stamp sets and products from the 2017 Holiday Catalog.

Today I have a handsome "north woods" pocket card to share. The pocket is on the inside and can hold a gift card, cash, tickets, a private love note, etc...

To make things easier, I have a 20-minute how-to video for you to view that I recorded live on Facebook last week. (Just keep in mind that is was recorded live. That will explain why I am talking with a few during the recording.)

Here are those measurements again so you can just copy and paste and reproduce this card right away...

Measurements:

• Basic Black cardstock: 11" x 4-1/4" scored at 2-1/4" and 5-1/2"
• Pear Pizzazz cardstock: 4" x 5-1/4"
• Old Olive cardstock: scraps for die-cutting trees and leaves
• Copper Foil paper: scraps for punching out deer and label piece
• Whisper White cardstock: scraps for stamping and punching out label piece
• Merry Little Christmas designer paper (black & white plaid design): 4" x 3"...4" x 2"...4" x 1" (all from the same 4" x 6" piece)
• Old Olive 1/8" Sheer ribbon: ~ 18"

Gift Box In A Card!

Such an adorable way to present a little gift to a coworker, a friend, or a special loved one at the holidays! Look at this cute idea...

Fellow demonstrator, Sandy Carlson presented some fun project ideas during the Thailand Incentive Trip's Share Fair event. And this box in a card idea was one of them. So I took her measurements and made a couple of my own.

Measurements for the green card with box:

• Old Olive Cardstock: 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" folded in half for the card base...and 3" x 3"
• Whisper White Cardstock: 1" x 5-1/2"...and scrap for stamping and punching out "No Peeking" piece
• Real Red Cardstock: 1-1/8" x 5-1/2"
• Merry Little Christmas Designer Paper (black & white sparkle pattern): 6" x 6"
• Red Tinsel Trim: about 24"

Directions:

• Keep card base folded and trim out the 2" x 2" section (which will be come 2" x 4" when unfolded). Use the information in the photo below to guide you.

• Score a 1/2" (actually just a little bit under 1/2") in on all four sides of the Old Olive 3" x 3" piece. Trim in on the score lines on two opposite sides. The angle trim these tabs as shown. Use the information in the photo below to guide you.

• Score 2" in on all four sides of the designer 6" x 6" paper piece. Trim in on the score lines on two opposite sides. Use the information in the photo below to guide you.

• Emboss the Whisper White strip, attach to the Real Red strip, and add to the bottom front of the card.
• Stamp and punch out the "No Peeking" image. Add to the left front of the card with Dimensionals.
• Color a couple rhinestones with a red Sharpie marker and add to this "No Peeking" piece.
• Assemble the box base and box lid with Fast Fuse (or Tear & Tape Adhesive).
• Put a light-weight small gift inside. Put the lid on. Tie up the box with the Red Tinsel Trim. And insert the box into the opening of the "slightly-open" card.

For the Red version of this card, follow the directions in a similar fashion, but use these measurements.

Measurements for the red card with box:

• Real Red Cardstock: 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" folded in half for the card base...and 3" x 3"
• Whisper White Cardstock: scrap for stamping and punching out "Just For You" piece
• Old Olive Cardstock: scrap for punching out a label piece
• Basic Black Cardstock: 1-3/4" x 1-3/4"
• Merry Little Christmas Designer Paper (green polka-dot pattern): 6" x 6"
• Merry Little Christmas Designer Paper (white snow on black pattern): 2" x 5-1/2"
• Vintage Crochet Trim: 5-1/2"

A Tip:

• To add the Old Olive layer behind the "Just For You" label piece, cut the punched-out Old Olive label piece in half as shown.  This way you can give the illusion that the green layer is wider by attaching it to the underside of the white one peeking out on the left and right.

The downfall of this cute card is that it's not an easy one to put in the mail. So don't bother with the envelope. Just put it on someone's desk or on a table where is will be noticed when the recipient arrives. (Sandy credits Becky Roberts for sharing the idea with her originally. More Giftable Greetings Alternative Ideas

I am getting excited for my September kit to ship, but I have a few more ideas to share with you that I created with this past month's Paper Pumpkin kit called Giftable Greetings.

This image below shows what we were to make with our August Paper Pumpkin kits. So pretty, right?!

But I always challenge myself to see what else I can come up with using the contents of the kit. I love thinking outside the box and creating alternate projects.

 

This first one is this super simple 12x12 photo pocket page layout.

I disassembled the box that came in the kit, flattened it out and cut two pieces from it (6" x 4" and 3" x 4") for two of the pockets. The smaller piece I left alone, and I only added the "congrats" title piece on Dimensionals to the the larger one.

Then for the third pocket piece I cut down one of the envelopes to 3" x 4", stamped "you did it!" across the top section, added a couple leaf stickers, and stuck on a flower. I tried to replicate the flower in the other pieces...I sponged the edges of a peach die-cut flower in the kit and the backside of one of the smaller flowers with Calypso Coral ink. I then stuck those two together and stamped the center. Easy peasy! Right?

I usually work with 2 kits when I create all my alternate projects. So I had another box! This was the one that I referred to in my video - the one that had the bottom popping up when I first opened my kit. I decided to use that inside flap as a cover instead. So I reinforced all the other sections of the box with strong Tear & Tape Adhesive, connected the back flaps, folded the outer edge of what was now the lid of my box the opposite direction to tuck it inside the box and help hold the box shut, and then I added my decorations (ribbon, leaves, and a tag).

I lined the inside with the blue tissue paper that comes with each Paper Pumpkin kit and filled the box with chocolates! (yum)

This last idea I have for you is a fun way to use up all the extra foliage stickers. Stampin' Up! gave us a ton of those in our August kits!

I used many extra supplies to build this card. But if you don't have these items on hand you could always just use the idea of the wreath in a different card layout.

For this card I cut some Garden Green cardstock to 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" and scored it parallel to the 5-1/2" edge at 2-1/8" and 4-1/4". Then I added four 2" x 5-3/8" panels - 2 Real Red designer paper pieces from the Quilted Christmas pack on the two outer sections and 2 Whisper White pieces of cardstock on the two inner sections. I tied on some gold ribbon and folded it shut into a z-fold.

Then I cut some Whisper White cardstock with the largest circle die in the Stitched Shapes Framelits set and stamped the center with the sentiment. (To stamp the sentiment first ink the "thinking" portion of the stamp. Stamp it down & clean it BEFORE inking just the "of you" portion of the stamp.)

The last step is building the wreath. I seriously just stuck down full and partial stickers starting at one section and going around. There was no rhyme or reason - no math or anything involved in this process. So go for it! Then I attached the berries and added this entire circle piece to the card with Dimensionals (under the left half only).

Origami Twist Fold Card

Ready for a fun-fold card idea that will knock your socks off?!

I was inspired by a card that fellow demonstrator, Kerstin Kries shared in a demonstrator-only Facebook group last month. She didn't post any measurements - just a few photos and a video clip of her opening and closing her card. I was determined to figure out how to make one myself right away! And I'm super excited to share it with all of you today!

I call it the "origami twist fold card." It may have another name. I guess this fold has been around for some time. One of my friends said she made her daughter's birthday invitations with this fold years ago. I'VE never seen it until recently, though. So I thought it COULD be new to some of you, too.

It was too hard to explain with just photos and words, so I recorded myself making it from start to finish in a Facebook Live video a couple days ago. Watch the video for tips and directions. And then scroll down to see close up photos my three variations, for written measurements, and for the supplies I used.

Halloween Card - I used only a little bit each from 5 sheets of designer paper to make this one, so I ended up making a bunch of these Halloween cards for a swap I was in recently.

Quilted Christmas Card - As I mention in my video, I presented these origami fold cards during a recent demonstrator team event. This last card (measuring 8x8 when open/4x4 when closed like the Halloween card) was our make-n-take. Susan Campfield, my upline came up with the design - it was her meeting and she wanted to provide the supplies. :) I'm so glad she used the Quilted Christmas suite. I just love the soft look!

Lemon Zest Meets Touches of Texture

I really love that Lemon Zest stamp set found on page 90 in the 2017-18 Annual Catalog. I'm a big fan of fruit images, and the word images in this one are so clever.

A great image that coordinates with the citrus slice in Lemon Zest is the "squirt" (the image in the upper left) that comes from this Touches of Texture stamp set found on page 152.

So today I want to share a fun fold birthday card I designed using those combined stamp sets.

I love how the juice of the lemon, orange and lime slices looks like it's coming right out of the card! And are you familiar with how to make these clear bubble accents?

This type of fold shares three messages on three separate layers, so it works perfectly for the word images in this card.

Measurements:

• Lemon Lime Twist Cardstock: 4-1/4" x 11" folded in half for the card base
• Whisper White Cardstock: two pieces that are 4-3/4" x 3-1/2"...and a scrap for stamping and punching a 1-3/4" diameter circle
• Basic Black Cardstock: 4-7/8" x 3-5/8"...two pieces punched with the 1-1/2" circle punch...and a strip that is 1-1/4" x at least 5-1/2" (can be a little longer)
• Peekaboo Peach Cardstock: a scrap for stamping and punching a 1-3/8" diameter circle
• Daffodil Delight Cardstock: a scrap for stamping and punching a 1-3/8" diameter circle

Directions:

• Stamp the citrus slice image randomly with all three citrus colors onto one of the 4-3/4" x 3-1/2" Whisper White pieces. (OR...stamp a WHOLE sheet of Whisper White and cut it down to 5 pieces of 4-3/4" x 3-1/2" to make many cards at once.) I stamped each color first onto my scrap Grid Paper so I would get a slightly lighter version of color in each citrus slice.

• Stamp the squirt image over the top of three slices that are somewhat in the center (using the full ink color so it's a bit darker).
• Attach this 4-3/4" x 3-1/2" Whisper White piece to the 4-7/8" x 3-5/8" Basic Black piece and then onto the front of the card base.
• Cut a notch in the end of the Basic Black strip of cardstock using either your Paper Snips or the Banner Triple Punch. Score the opposite end in at 1", and fold this one-inch end back. Put adhesive on the back side of this one-inch section, position the strip where you want it to be tucking the one-inch section inside the card... and close. The adhesive will connect the one-inch section of the strip to the inside back of the card.
• Stamp the second 4-3/4" x 3-1/2" Whisper White piece with Happy Birthday and another squirt image, and secure it to the inside of the card.
• Stamp "Life's Short" onto Daffodil Delight scrap and punch it out with the 1-3/8" Circle Punch. Stamp "Live It With Zest" onto Peekaboo Peach scrap and punch it out with the 1-3/8" Circle Punch. Layer these each onto the 1-1/2" Basic Black circles.
• Position and attach the Peekaboo Peach/Basic Black circle under the closed Basic Black banner somewhat in the center of the card.
• Stamp one more Daffodil Delight citrus slice image onto the Whisper White scrap, and punch it out with the 1-3/4" Circle Punch. Attach it to the top of the Basic Black banner so it covers the Peekaboo Peach/Basic Black circle underneath.
• Add the Daffodil Delight/Basic Black circle on the top of that 1-3/4" Circle using Dimensionals.
• To finish off the card, peel the white adhesive layer from three White Perfect Accents. Attach them to the black banner with Fine Tip Glue and allow to dry. They look like water drops!

 

There's always a birthday to celebrate. Tonight we are celebrating my nephew Jake's. Jake is one of those kids who puts his all into everything he does. (This is a photo of him doing a "varial kickflip" with his skateboard.) He definitely lives his life with zest.

And I bet he'd eat a whole lemon if I dared him to, too! LOL Maybe I'll put one in his gift bag.
